A page of lined paper (approx 21x18cm, torn along lower edge) bearing typed lyrics with several amendments for Bob Dylan's 'I'm Not There' (1956, recorded c 1967). After discussions with notable Dylan collectors, it is believed that this is an extremely rare working lyric draft of what is regarded as one of Dylan's greatest piece of songwriting.
Provenance: our vendor purchased a first paperback edition copy of Allen Ginsberg's 'Ankor Wat' with a signature by AG and inscription to Sally Grossman, wife of Dylan's first manager Albert Grossman. The page with lyrics was tucked into the book toward the middle and fell out as they were leafing through.
Sally Grossman (1939-2021) and Bob Dylan were very close friends and Sally famously featured on the cover of Dylan's classic 1965 album 'Bringing It All Back Home'. It is likely that these typewritten working lyrics have sat nestled within this book since not long after she was gifted it by Ginsberg in 1969.
This book and many others were part of a collection from the Sally Grossman estate that were sold to a book dealer in the US.
ADDITIONAL NOTE - 10TH APRIL - further provenance has been supplied in the form of a copy of the Bob Dylan magazine 'The Telegraph' issue Winter 1990, which features a scanned image of this typescript and note from the editor to describe it as an 'original typescript' sent to the magazine by 'an anonymous correspondent'. Images of the magazine cover and pages have been added to the lot description.
