PUNK HISTORY - VIVIENNE WESTWOOD / DEREK JARMAN - THE ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN 'OPEN T-SHIRT' LETTER AND AND ORGINAL T-SHIRT.

An original and important piece of Punk history, this the original handwritten by Vivienne Westwood 'open t-shirt' letter c 1978 and delivered to artist, writer and film maker Derek Jarman in the form of a popular t-shirt printed at Westwood/McLaren's 'Seditionaries' boutique. The letter represents Westwood's reaction to Jarman's film 'Jubilee' (1978) - an exploration of the Punk scene perceived by Westwood and others (there were raucous scenes of dissent at the premiere) to be unsubstantial and underwhelming. The letter reads (in part) 'I had been to see it once and thought it the most boring and therefore disgusting film i had ever seen' as well as both referencing Jarman's homosexuality and 'Uncle Tom Don Letts'.

The page measures 38x50cm approx, with collage elements ('JUBILEE', an inky fingerprint (poss Westwoods) and 'PUNK' are all pasted on). Shows extensive water damage, rendering a part of the body of text mostly illegible. Also with tears along lower edge and general age wear. In fragile condition, on thin paper stock.

Also with an original example of the printed Seditionaries t-shirt with the original black on black Mclaren / Westwood / Seditionaries label, arms cut off. Measures approx 62cm from collar to hem (back length).

Provenance: This T-shirt originally owned and worn by Helen Wellington-Lloyd.

Sold for £4,600
