"My first job was in One Stop records in the West End. It was run by John Gillespie who knew everyone and everyone knew him. It was the hippest record shop in London. (John had previously employed Elton John as his counter assistant!). Seymour Stein was a regular customer when in town and I believe he and John had a ‘thing’ for a while. Anyway when One Stop was sold by Island Records to the Harlequin chain, John left England to take top a position at Seymour’s new record label in New York. It was called Sire. About two months later I received an album in the post. It was this - a very advanced copy of their new release. I think this was the first copy in Europe, even John Peel didn’t have one, he just had a cassette. This is where punk rock began. This is a truly historic disc. I never though I’d ever part with this but, equally, what’s the point of keeping it in a cupboard? "
