  Lot 293A

ERIC CLAPTON INTEREST - A GUITAR GIFTED BY ERIC CLAPTON TO ALAN ROSS OF ROSS.

A heavily modified guitar with what appears to be an original 1961 Fender Stratocaster body, serial to backplate 59447, featuring a c 1980s Ibanez neck, a Kohler bridge. Many parts of the guitar have been modified and it is not known which original features (if any) from a 1961 Strat remain. Prospective bidders are encouraged to view the guitar in person.

This guitar was owned and played by Alan Ross who fronted 'Ross'; an RSO act of the c 1970s, as well as performing on The Who's 'Tommy' and performing with/alongside Eric Clapton, John Entwistle, Tina Turner, George Michael, Kylie Minogue and many more in a long and distinguished career.

Ross was gifted the guitar by Clapton during the 1974 Ocean Boulevard Tour - possibly as a gift on his 21st birthday. It is not known at what point the modifications were made to the guitar.

From the New York Times, July 7, 1974, page 16

"Another English guitarist/ composer/vocalist, a 21‐year‐old lad named Alan Ross and his band —called Ross — will provide the opening act for shy, self‐effacing, comely, 29‐year‐old Clapton. Some rock scene propagandists have already, begun to spread the word that Ross is an imminent superstar; some call him “the next Clapton.”

Showing many cosmetic marks to body. Playing state unknown, viewing advised. Not currently inspected internally.

Sold for £2,400
