  Lot 167

THE BEATLES - TWO HANDWRITTEN LETTERS BY MAUREEN STARKEY.

Correspondence dated 1967 from Ringo Starr's wife Maureen Starkey, to include: a two-page letter sent from the Starkey's 'Sunny Heights' address with a note from Maureen to our vendor thanking her for correspondence and accepting the offer of cuttings and photographs, signed by Maureen (each page 13 x 20.5cm, excellent condition) with original postmarked envelope dated 28th Sep 1967. A second letter sent from 'St George's Hill' is a brief note thanking our vendor for an invitation and politely declining, again signed by Maureen Starkey (17.5 x 23cm, excellent condition, folded).

Provenance: owned by our vendor, the correspondent, since receipt in 1967.

The vendor remembers:

As teenagers my friend, Jacky, and I had decked out the garage at home into a ‘Beatles den.’ Why would the Beatles not want to come to our party in such wonderful surroundings?! Invitations were duly sent. Then how polite it was of Maureen Starkey to reply on behalf of ‘the boys.’ Alas they were too busy!

I think it was the time when my ‘Beatles den’ garage had to be emptied of all the memorabilia due to a forthcoming move. I was sure the Beatles would need it! Another very polite response came from Maureen Starkey, thanking me and telling me where I could send the paraphernalia. I can’t remember whether I actually sent all the pictures etc.
