A TDK D46 cassette tape containing alternate takes of 'Meat Is Murder'. Handwritten note to label reads 'M'S TAPE' - possibly indicating this was Morrissey's review copy. See below for an assessment of contents by an independent Smiths expert.
"Meat Is Murder - A real revelation! Early Mix of the album presumably for review by the band. It's clear that after this mix was listened to, decisions were made to apply several vocal overdubs to some of the tracks and additional mixing, see below for detail
The Headmaster Ritual - Souinds like an early mix of the music, Morrissey's vocals are a different vocal take, not the take used for the album
Rusholme Ruffians - Rough early mix, Rourke's bass dominates the track, which was made less prominent in the final mix
I Want The One I Can't Have - Mix sounds similar to final album version, however, on this mix Morrissey sings "A tough kid who sometimes eats nails, raised on prisoner's aid, he killed his mother when he was thirteen and somehow this really impressed me" instead of the subtle changes that were applied to those lyrics on the final version..
What She Said - Similar mix to final album version, but Joyce's drums sound more prominent in parts.
That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore - Similar mix to final album version, however, Morrissey's vocal outro is entirely different to final version, Joyce's drums sound different on the reprise.
Nowhere Fast - Early mix, but very similar mix to final version
Well I Wonder - Early Mix, Joyce's drums are very course and unsubtle on this mix
Barbarism Begins At Home - Early Mix, Joyce's drums again are overbearing on this mix.
Meat Is Murder - Early Mix, Morrissey's vocals sound softer on first verse, vocal harmonies sound slightly different. Sheep are more prominent! Abbattoir sounds at the end of the song sound different."
