SONY CASSETTE RECORDER USED WHILST MAKING VENUS AND MARS.

A Sony TC-124CS cassette recorder in a leather carry case with portable speakers. This machine was used by engineer Alan O'Duffy whilst making Paul McCartney and Wings' 'Venus and Mars' in January 1975. In Alan's words the history of the recorder is as follows.

"I used this superb machine on a trip across America in 1973 as it was the most trendy piece of portable kit at the time. I had thought that it was the same machine that Keith Richards used on the recording session of 'Street Fighting Man', but Wikipedia suggests that it was a Philips mono tape recorder for those Beggars Banquet sessions. I recall that Keith recorded the acoustic guitar at home and then came to overdub the band who listened to his cassette distorted rhythm track as a guide track for the feel. I am credited as one of the studio engineers on the 'Beggars Banquet' album for the Rolling Stones, produced by Jimmy Miller in Olympic Studio One, although I did not do this particular cassette drivin' session.

I used it in Ireland working with the Rolling Stones Mobile truck in Tipperary for the 'Horslips' debut album 'Happy to Meet' a Celtic Rock hooley. and recall a stoned dawn wander around the paths of a grand house, recording the effect of my walking boots, with this stereo microphone suspended just above the gravel.

Subsequently, I did use this exact Sony Cassette machine and accoutrements in January 1975 in New Orleans recording 'Venus and Mars' with Paul Linda McCartney and Wings at Seasaint Studio and subsequently Wally Heider's studio in Cahuenga Boulevard, North Hollywood in LA. I used it as a cassette reference only for my room at the Le Richelieu Hotel in the historic French Quarter of New Orleans Hotel where we stayed. It was part of my kit and entertainment. Those days we travelled with a bundle of cassettes for music listening pleasure. So this machine is part of my history, and a component of the production of Venus and Mars Album for Paul McCartney which became a USA & UK # One album."
