Lot 456

LOU REED - DEMO REEL TO REEL RECORDINGS.

Two 7 1/2 NAB reel-to-reels containing 17 demos of Lou Reed's early solo tracks. Reed originally gave the recordings to Tom Adams, the highly regarded artist and designer whose artwork would feature on Reed's eponymous debut LP. The tapes include tracks that Lou had written during his tenure with The Velvet Underground including 'I Can't Stand It', 'I'm Sticking With You', 'Lisa Says', 'Ride Into The Sun', 'Ocean' and 'She's My Best Friend'. Interestingly the track 'A Perfect Day' didn't make the cut, with Lou Reed writing 'No!' next to the track - that would have to wait for the album 'Transformer'. Comes with a letter from Tom Adams in which he says 'Going through the tapes with me, Lou underlines the songs he and his producer (Richard Robinson) has chosen and we discussed possible ways to interpret them visually. He was an inspiring artist and I will always treasure the memory of his visit." You can read more about the history of the recordings in the Record Collector article (Ian Shirley) from July 2017 that is provided with the lot.
